Pick of the Week/L.A. Weekly Monday, December 19, 2005: Glen
Matlock & the Philistines at the Knitting Factory. When the Sex Pistols
kicked out original bassist Glen Matlock in 1977, they reportedly accused him
of being a fan of the Beatles which was probably the harshest thing you could
say about a punk rocker back then. And yet it was Matlock's pop instincts and
gift for melody, ? he wrote the music to Anarchy in the U.K. that made the Pistols'
anthems so catchy. (Matlock's replacement, Sid Vicious, had the archetypal punk
image, but he was a lousy musician.) Undeterred, he immediately formed the Rich
Kids with the pre-Ultravox Midge Ure, releasing the pure-pop gem Ghosts of Princes
in Towers, with its surging choruses and romantic, defiantly non-punk imagery.Matlock
was the first Pistol to perform live in L.A., backing Iggy Pop at that stage-crushing
show at the long-defunct Stardust Ballroom in 1979, and wrote some memorable tunes
(Ambition, I Need More) on Pop's 1980 LP, Soldier. He's since rejoined the Pistols,
written an autobiography (I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol), and returns for a rare
local appearance. Also at the Anarchy Library, Sat. (Falling James). 16th
